Cross Country

A WMSA open cross-country event consists of a course where a number of flags (usually ten) are spaced around the Crook Peak area. The challenge is to travel around this course, pausing at each flag and manoeuvring the glider in a specified fashion (task) about that flag. The contestant then proceeds to the next flag and repeats the task.  A time limit is set for the course.  Within the time limit, points are awarded for each flag that a contestant reaches and carries out the task. If required, contestants will be divided into groups and usually each group will compete in two rounds. For each round, each group will have one or more winners, i.e. completes all the tasks within the time limit or completes the most tasks within the time limit. However, a potential problem of flying group slots is that one group may experience differing lift conditions to another. With the aim of neutralising this problem the following scoring system is used for each group slot.

competitor's score = competitor's number of turns  X 1000
                    winner's number of turns

Competitor's group scores are added together to form an overall score.  Those with the highest score will then go into a final round where they compete to find the eventual winner. Note: Scores from previous rounds are not added to final round scores. In the event of a tie for first, second or third positions, countback on previous results are used.
